My son goes to a Montessori school where he is being taught letter sounds. The school emphasizes we do not teach phonics at home. Since I haven’t learnt phonics, I decided not to interfere with his school’s lesson plan.
But guess what, Mr. 4.10 can read CVC and other words now. I didn’t put any conscious effort to get his reading cells kickstarted. All I did was to get him these books and read them to him aloud like how I would read his other books.
One night while I was reading the same book for the millionth time, he started reading along with me. My initial thought was that the illustrations were giving the text away. But to my surprise, he kept reading more words which didn’t belong to any of those bright illustrations.
Only after that little moment of enlightenment, I learnt more about CVC words and phonological awareness. Did it help me much? More on that in the coming days.
Our reading series books are listed here. We did have a wide collection of Usborne series and ‘My letter’ series. We sold them off and this is all that we have on our shelf. How I wish I didn’t part with those books earlier. Never knew it would have helped me more at this stage of his learning. It is all part of this mom’s learning though, isn’t it ?
