Our Friday Favourite Fives- Toys for 6-12 months old

January 31, 2018 by Melani 13 Comments

Did you read our previous post on favt fives- Instagram mom accounts who inspire?

This week let me express my favorite 5 toys for babies( 6-12 months). This favorite listings are based on the interests of both my sons during that period.

Also this post might come in handy, if you choose to pick only the essentials for your baby 😊

1.Balls– This simple toy has been our looked-for toy right from the beginning. Balls of different sizes and textures is what you should look for. This one can be shopped at corner stores, market or any small store, easy on the pocket too.

2.Squeaky toys– When I was a first time mom, I was surprised how this silly little toy instantly distracts a crying baby.  And I love how these toys also double up as bath toys. Thanks to its lightweight, rubbery, plastic-ky nature. I am not really fond of plastic toys, but this one is too good to be exempted. Also what a wonderful start to learn cause and effect action 😊

3.Musical instruments– This is a must have in every baby’s collection. Children develop their auditory processing early on . Also these mild sounds soothe them. Do not go for loud sounds. Our collection includes LFaW musical kit set (Tambourine, maracas and claplets), xylophone as well as bell rattles.

4.Vehicles– I had no clue babies will also like mini cars for toys. Cars and vehicles were introduced to my elder one pretty late and he took a natural liking to it. For my younger one, we had a mini stash which his brother had fondly collected. Our toddler now chooses to play with them and mimick the pull & push action of the car wheels. It is such a sight to watch him play with these minature cars.

5.Bead Maze- This simple colorful toy can be introduced when children learn to sit at around 7-8 months or so. Babies learn to manipulate these beads and understand that their fingers can move and spin objects. However, this toy can be used only for a short duration like 2-3 months and I have observed that children outgrow this toy pretty quickly. But it definitely needs to stay on your toy shelf for a short span.

Having said it all, I have always believed that babies need very minimal toy collection.  They are fascinated by all things they see and touch. And that is one of the reasons we also have a very limited collection in our store.

A simple spoon and a bowl kept my babies occupied for HOURS. So let them get the best of both the worlds and pick your toys wisely 😊

Your posts are always so helpful. I’m so happy that my kid is almost 12 months and that she’ll probably need a little more advanced toys

I am so relieved to know that I introduced all these to babyT when he was in that phase. He loved musical toys the best. We also have the beadmaze from LFaW. 🙂
