Geography is one of the most neglected subject.
Infact, we might think why a preschooler needs to have geography as part of their curriculum.
But don’t you think it is fascinating to know much more than where we live?
I wanted to start country by country unit study to our learning. But hey we are still learning Indian States and it is vast by itself.
Like when we talk about Kerala we talk about cocounts, coconut oil, spotting the differences between palm tree and coconut tree and so on.
And something even more important- FOOD. Like making Paruppu payasam for dessert. You get the drift?
Anyways, we went a step ahead and learnt a bit more about our continents while he had the interest. We pulled out our animal basket and placed them on our Scotty’s World Map.
We used this wonderful Usborne book to know more the animals that live in each continent. If we had the animal figure in our basket, we placed it on the map.
And while we did this, my son told me about Rattle snakes from North America. He told me about its tail, the rattle sound it makes and how dangerous it is. And hey, he learned these facts from the Discovery Animal book. Thanks to him be able to read on his own 😊
My SMALL also got me the peacock and Tiger to be placed in India. We briefly spoke about Tigers and Peacocks on our recent visit to Bandipur Tiger reserve.
I am amazed by how much information was collected during a single trip. I so wish we have that kind of money to keep traveling the world. But lets face the reality and stick to the books before we can travel that far 😊
Keep following this space to see how we progress further in the geography department.
